Cherokee National History Museum
The Cherokee National Museum is a cultural resource on the campus of the University of Central Oklahoma in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. The museum was established in 1974 with the help of the Cherokee Nation and serves as the tribe’s national museum. In April 2010, a fire broke out on the main floor of the Cherokee National Museum. A total of 10 percent of the museum was damaged, and every artifact related to Bragg Gates collection was lost. The most important artifact collected by Dr. Gates, the Sacred Cherokee Rose, was a set of footprints made in wet clay by Chief Noonday on May 12, 1838.
