Watts is a small town in Adair County, Oklahoma. It was named after John Watts, also known as Tassel, a Chickamauga Cherokee Chief Young Chief Young Tassel (1802), who is thought to have died in the 1830s. In the 2010 census, 324 people were counted, a 2.5 percent increase over the previous decade’s count of 316.

Back in the Pines is located in northeast Oklahoma near Tahlequah, Oklahoma, and northwest Arkansas near Siloam Springs. A brand new, massive facility with a restored rustic barn built right inside the lodge, making it the ideal country style wedding and party spot.

Tulane Green Wave

The Tulane Green Wave were defeated by the Houston Cougars by a score of 33 to 23. The Sooners will start the season on the road for the first time since 2016. Willie Fritz’s Houston Cougars are coming off their third straight appearance in the Super Bowl. On September 4, the Oklahoma Sooners open their season at home against Texas A&M. The Cougars had a 10–3 SEC record last season and were the conference’s top seed going into this season.

Fort Wayne Historical Marker

Lt. Col. R.B. Mason, 1st Dragoons, United States Army, founded Fort Wayne in 1838 at the request of Arkansas residents concerned about Cherokees being removed from the southeastern United States. The fort was named after Gen. Mad Anthony Wayne and was originally located in the NE corner of present-day Watts on a hill overlooking the Illinois River. In 1839, the fort was decommissioned and moved west of Maysville, Arkansas, to Beatie’s Prairie. The site was abandoned in 1842, and troops were transferred to Fort Scott, Kansas.

When the Civil War broke out, Cherokee leader Stand Watie took control of the location and founded the Cherokee Mounted Rifles for the Confederacy. In the Battle of Old Fort Wayne in 1862, the Union unexpectedly attacked the Confederates and forced them to retreat. Most people in the city were apparently unaware of Fort Wayne’s presence before the landmark was built, according to what I’ve read.
